BRYAN, Texas — The Bryan-College Station area has experienced many small businesses forced to shut down over the past several months -- one group is taking matters into their own hands, literally.
Residents like Kristy Borboa wonder where her favorite shops have gone, with at least six area restaurants and businesses shutting down in the past few months.
With the help of her friends, she is using rubber ducks to bring more attention to struggling businesses.
Approximately 40 different yellow ducks will be hidden throughout the BCS area and residents can locate them using clues from their social media pages. Those who post the most will have more entries into the contest where they will have a chance to win cash prizes of up to $400.
“If and when you find a duck, you’re going to take the duck and scan the QR code that’s going to show you all the participating restaurants. You go in with the duck and you say, 'Hi I found a duck', and they give you their promotion and then you take a picture of yourself with the duck with your food and post it on social media and post about your visit there, that’s another entry into our contest,” Borboa explained.
Restaurant owners will be offering special promotions for those who come in with their ducks and The Station on 29th, is looking forward to the well-needed business.
“We’re constantly offering new things to customers we’re going through a menu change right now. it’s just gonna drive people to places they’ve never been before and give them a reason to go those restaurants," The Station Owner, Richard Womack said.
The contest will begin Feb. 1 and ends Feb. 29.
Paul Borboa expressed the common feeling among restaurant owners, “It’s like a breath of fresh air, it's something they really needed they’ve just been incredibly appreciative of it. We’re here to help our business alone we don’t earn anything from this this is just something we’re doing to help these businesses.”
