COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The Lincoln Center offers weekly programs with senior activities including board games, scrapbooking, fitness classes and more.
But increased isolation during the holidays can make life difficult due to loss of family, financial, physical limitations or the loss of familiar traditions.
“All of our seniors are retired so they would just be at home, so this gives them something recreational things to do at the Lincoln center,” Assistant Center Supervisor, Markeesha Watson told 6 News.
Current members feel if they didn’t have this resource, they would never leave the house, and want to encourage others to make the most of the Lincoln Center during this time.
A member since 2016, Faye Daily said, “now that I’m laid back so I can just go when I want to and enjoy the fun of being with my friends and the ones of the community, most of them, I’ve been with for a long time. I lost my husband around 14 years ago and I miss him, my son too but it’s still good, I still have families I can be around here.”
The sense of companionship is essential for senior citizens to be active in their communities, and the friendships created are needed during the holidays.
“I do a lot of physical work I enjoy that too but it’s a time when I don’t want to be by myself so I come here and have fun we play cards and dominos that’s come of my favorite games and I win most of the time,” described, member, Mary Anne Childs.
With an open Christmas party this Friday, members are encouraging everyone to come out and make memories.
“Just come introduce yourself mingle with others and you’ll find a spot where you fit in,” Childs said.
