CSISD School is fighting food insecurity with a new massive donation from child advocacy non-profit

According to general store coordinator and sixth-grade English Language Arts teacher Lauren Cummings, the school's food pantry relies entirely on donations.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — On Tuesday, Cypress Grove Intermediate received 450 boxes of food to help children in need.

The donation came from One More Child, a child advocacy organization that heard about this food pantry through a connection with Texas A&M University and the Mike Evans foundation

48% of students at Cypress Grove are economically disadvantaged and receive free or reduced lunch.

A simple Facebook post from an English teacher asking for help for her students brought them enough food to serve more than 30 kids a week.

Lauren Cummings, sixth grade English teacher and the food pantry coordinator, described how the food pantry is distributing the food to those in need.

"Our plan is to send a bunch of it him for spring break because they have that extended break from school and the consistent meals from the cafeteria, so we’ll send a bunch of boxes home for our regular students who get food pantry bags, and we’ll extend the donation to beyond our normal 30 kids who get the bags so they brought 450 boxes which equated to 7,000 meals."

The school's student Council has been helping with this food pantry and are excited to help more of their peers.

Student Council member and sixth grader, Hayden DeVries, explained her passion for helping, “We give more to more kids then more kids at cypress grove will have food for at home and less will have to eat breakfast and stuff at school they can eat more at home after school I know as soon as I get home I'm going through the pantry.”

Each student receives a discreet bag full of non-perishables that they are able to take home.
