COLLEGE STATION, Texas — With almost 1.4 million veterans living in the state of Texas, Brazos County was able to honor those who have lost their lives through a special memorial.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Monument in Veterans Park has been dedicated to America’s missing and unknown soldiers from the Revolutionary War to the present.
“It just represents so many things to so many people and we are so grateful to have it in our community in the Brazos Valley," said Sherry Frisk, a member of the Never Forget Garden Committee. "We are grateful to have a place that people can come and visit from now on."
For one 91-year-old resident, this is a living tribute to her lost military family.
"My grandmother had three in the service in the Second World War, my dad was one of them," Patricia Thurber said. "My uncle Jerry was killed in France, and in Vietnam, one of my first cousins was killed, and it was all for a good thing, but I just want everyone to respect the veterans and to love our country.”
Local veterans are hoping this park can serve as a place of peace for the families of those who did not make it home.
“One of the things we just hope for this to be is families that want to do a memorial, they can come here and do it, they can meditate on the moment and honor their loved one," said Bob Cohen, a Vietnam Veteran and member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
