BRYAN, Texas — The American Legion Post 159 held its annual Memorial Day service on Monday, May 27, where different generations of community members came together to remember those they have lost.
One veteran looks to remind the public of the meaning of this day, in the name of his fallen friends.
“We can never fully repay them, but one thing we can do going forward is to make sure we protect our nation, and it's important that everybody understands the value of our freedom,” said Navy Veteran James Pfeffer.
Over 100 people in attendance shared their memories of showing support to their lost loved ones throughout their lives.
“Some of them remember putting flags on the graves of their uncles and aunts and they remember giving poppies out at stores and they just remember a wonderful time of families remembering those who have gone on, of listening to their stories and knowing that they were cared about and loved,” described Post Commander Dale Hutchcraft.
The veteran community wants everyone to keep educating future generations about the value of Memorial Day.
“I want everyone to know that Memorial Day is not a day to say 'happy' anything, it is a day to remember those who have given their all to our nation,” Hutchcraft continued.
“When we forget where we came from and everything it took to buy our freedom, then we’re gonna lose it," Pfeffer concluded.
