$50,000 Disc Golf Course is at risk of closure due to resident complaints

Hudson Park's new disc golf course is at risk of getting shut down by the city of Bryan due to a list of complaints from neighbors.

BRYAN, Texas — After putting $50,000 into its creation, the city of Bryan has decided to shut down the disc golf course at Park Hudson over resident complaints.

The championship-level course runs through Park Hudson and Tiffany Park and has only officially been open for a few months.

“The first two months it was played over 2,000 times it's hard to get an exact number, but it is the most popular course in the Brazos Valley,” said Vice President of the Brazos Valley Disc Golf Club, and owner of Armory Disc Golf Shop, Dustin Sanford.

But the city of Bryan says the neighborhood complaints have been constant, as the course has brought in many disc golfers, including Texas A&M’s nationally ranked disc golf team, to the park.

Bryan Deputy City Manager, Hugh Walker explained, “We’ve heard from a number of residents right there in the area that are concerned with the course. Discs hitting houses, discs going to backyards, on rooftops, players having to cross the actual waking trail and there’s a number of folks that live there. So you’re having disc golf players mingle with the walkers which can be problematic.”

Despite its popularity with players, the city is prepared to start closing the course on Tuesday.

“We thought there might be a problem with some of the holes and the only answer we got back was we’re working on it. And then Thursday with no warning whatsoever, they’re pulling the course and so we weren’t really given a chance to address the complaints,” Sanford said.

The community has started a petition to keep this golf course in place and it has already reached over a thousand signatures.

One resident has already signed the petition and was looking to explore the sport himself.

Park goer, Larry Zuber, explained his support for the course, “There’s another aspect to it because I’m interested in getting a couple discs and trying them out myself because there aren’t any seniors out here. My knees don’t go with pickle ball but my elbows sure work.”
