BRENHAM, Texas — Central Texans may soon be able to see a piece of the Smithsonian Museum right here in their hometowns.
"Crossroads: Change in Rural America", a traveling exhibit of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) division, will make its way through the Lone Star State in 2024 and 2025 as part of the Museum on Main Street program, according to the Texas Historical Commission (THC).
According to the THC, Crossroads "examines the impacts of the population shift from rural to urban areas in the U.S. during the last century, as well as the importance of preserving small towns for their unique culture, history and economic revitalization opportunities."
The exhibit is currently scheduled to travel through six Texas cities:
- San Augustine: Aug. 24–Oct. 6, 2024
- Clifton: Oct. 12–Dec. 1, 2024
- Brenham: Dec. 7, 2024–Jan. 19, 2025
- Rockport: Jan. 25–March 9, 2025
- Buffalo Gap: March 15–April 27, 2025
- San Elizario: May 3–June 15, 2025
- Bandera: June 21–Aug. 2, 2025
The exhibit will feature six free-standing kiosks with one interactive digital kiosk across 750 square feet, according to the THC.
