This North Texas high school looks to break the Guinness World Record for largest mum

Lewisville High School is creating a mum that, when complete, will be 300 sq. feet. The base alone is 8 ft. wide.

LEWISVILLE, Texas — What started as a token of affection from a teen boy to the girl he wanted to ask out -- evolved into a Texas-sized tradition. Homecoming mums tell stories of passion, goals and dreams using charms, ribbons, flowers and bells to bring them to life. And now a North Texas high school is hoping to set a record for the largest one.

The competitions amongst high schools this year have been well… “Mumentous,” as the book about the origin of the tradition says.

Now, Lewisville High School is creating a homecoming mum that, when complete, will be 300 sq. feet. The base alone is 8 ft. wide. The idea was sparked by fashion and interior design teacher Abby Winston. Her class put together a list of materials, and within just a week, the community had purchased everything off the list they needed.

After nine weeks of planning and crafting the construction of the mum, Winston and her students are hoping to be etched in the record books for breaking the Guinness World Record for the largest mum.

The mum will be on display during the Lewisville football team's homecoming game against Plano High. The school says the mum will hoisted into the air by a man lift or a fire truck.
