Brazos County Health Department hands out "safe-sex goodie bags"

As part of a "safe-sex goodie bag," the Brazos County Health Department is handing out free condoms, instruction guides and lubricant.

Many riders are offered an array of things when they take an Uber or Lyft. From water bottles, mints, gum, and a place to charge their phones, drivers want the best for their passengers - and the best rating.

And with the help of the Brazos County Health Department (BCHD), one more thing may be handed out in the Brazos Valley.

Condoms.

As part of a "safe-sex goodie bag," the BCHD is handing out free condoms, instruction guides and lubricant to drivers.

The idea itself came from an Uber driver, said Mary Parrish a health educator with BCHD.

Parrish said the driver that reached out the health department had many student passengers and wanted them to have access to the right precautions if necessary.

"You don't want someone making a mistake," said Uber driver Estefan Ramos. "So you're like 'Hey be safe, if you do something crazy, be safe about it."

Ramos said for drivers it may be a difficult conversation to have, but for him, he's going to lead with his humor.

"Maybe like an innuendo," he said. "Saying something like 'Are you gonna give me a tip, well here's my tip for you,' something like that."

The BCHD will be handing out the goodie bags to drivers until they run out. Parrish said all a driver needs to do to get a bag is come to the health department.

"If a driver is interested in getting a bag, all they have to do is come up to the desk, talk to one of the receptionists, and ask for one," she said.

The BCHD is open Monday through Friday from 8-5. Bags will be handed out during those times.
