Texas A&M Engineering Academy at Blinn-Brenham expand enrollment for Fall 2020

BRENHAM, Texas — More students can take advantage of Texas A&M's Engineering Academy at Blinn-Brenham. The Blinn College District Engineering Department and Texas A&M's College of Engineering announced they will increase its student capacity to 150 in the program.

The Academy has some of the most curious students on campus.

"All my life I've been mathematically and scientifically inclined," said engineering major at Blinn-Brenham, Alex Alvarez. "Every time I see anything I just want to know how it works."

Academy students are taught A&M Engineering courses, while enrolled at the Blinn-Brenham campus. It makes the journey to get their engineering degree more affordable.

"My favorite part is being able to have access to A&M teaching and everything that comes with A&M, but also having cheap options to study things like chemistry," Alvarez said.

Now the program will be able to host even more inquisitive pupils.

"Texas A&M decided to increase our capacity to 150 students for the incoming Fall 2020 class," said Ashley Hermes, the engineering program director at Blinn College District.

For the past two years, A&M's Engineering Academy at Blinn-Brenham has been at its full capacity of 100 students. With the expanded number, it makes admission to the Texas A&M College of Engineering a better possibility.

"As a transfer student its a very competitive admission, but with the Engineering Academy, students have a guaranteed admission," Hermes said. "As long as they meet the grade and course requirements, students are guaranteed their first choice engineering major."

Students already in the program said it is a challenging, but exciting opportunity they are glad they chose.

"Its a competition with yourself to get that 3.5 GPA to be able to get your first choice in engineering for A&M," said Nicole LoGiudice, an engineering major at Blinn-Brenham. "Getting (into the academy) is hard, it's another jump that is hard too."

Students accepted to the Texas A&M Engineering Academy at Blinn-Brenham participate and live in a learning community on the Mill Creek Hall on campus.
